Variables

Independent Variable: Brand of Cake mix
Dependent Variable: Howe many people liked each brand

Variables That Need To Be Controlled: the testers stay the same, same oven, same pan, same cupcake liners, same mixing utensils, same temperature, same time of day to test, same frosting

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

Pastry: A dough of flour, shortening, and water, used as a base and covering in baked dishes such as pies.
Pillsbury: American manufacturer who founded (1869) C.A. Pillsbury and Company, one of the largest flour-milling enterprises of the 19th century.

General Plan

An experiment will be conducted to test the taste of two different brands of white cake mix. Cupcakes will be made using Pillsbury white cake mix and Betty Crocker white cake mix. They will both be frosted with Pillsbury whipped chocolate frosting. Twenty-four subjects will be judging on which cake mix taste the best. Be doing a blind taste test. Put the two half cupcakes and mark them A and B. Then the testers will eat them and decide which one taste better. The experiment will be tested on March 21st.

Potential Problems And Solutions

People eating more than the half cupcake given to them. Solution - Could use less people.
People don't bring in their permission slips to try the cupcakes. Solution - Ask different people.
Buying the right ingredients for each mix, and if they were not using the same ones. Solution - Read the back of each before starting.

How to do a blind taste test...

In marketing, a blind taste test is often used as a tool for companies to compare their brand to another brand. For example, the Pepsi Challenge is a famous taste test that has been run by Pepsi since 1975 as a method to show their superiority to Coca-Cola. Taste tests are also a tool sometimes used by companies to develop their brand or new product. There are two types of blind taste tests. The single blind test is where the experimenters know the information about the participants but the participants do not know anything about the experimenters or the product that they are testing. In a double blind taste test, the experimenters know nothing about the participants. The aforementioned Pepsi Challenge is an example of a single blind test. A 1999 commercial for 7Up used a blind taste test with one as 7Up and the other as rancid milk, dishwasher liquid, wallpaper paste, and others that tasted bad, and the host said, "See, 7Up tastes better".

The Independent variable is the brand of cupcake mix. The majority of the subjects selected Pillsbury as their favorite brand. Twenty-four subjects tasted each brand of cupcake.

Discussion

The question for this experiment is what brand of cake mix do middle school students like better? The experiment answered the question that the testers liked Pillsbury more than Betty Crocker. Twelve cupcakes were made using each brand of cake mix. The cupcakes were cut in half and placed on two separate tables labeled A and B. Twenty four students from middle school tasted the cupcakes. Students recorded which of the cupcakes they preferred and the hypothesis was proven because Pillsbury was chosen more by the students more than Betty Crocker
The results showed that 66.7% preferred the Pillsbury brand and 33.3% chose Betty Crocker. The hypothesis was supported by these results.
Some problems or issues that went wrong with this experiment is that a lot of people were taking too many cupcakes. One thing that could have been done differently is, there could have been a sign on the experiment table saying “only one half of a cupcake”.
